Is it possible to heat my home and my hot water using solar panels?
Our Answer Heating water with solar energy is ideal as hot water is needed throughout the year, both when the sun is high and therefore most likely provides all the heating required, and when it is low and helps top up the heating.
Also it is heating stored water which is then used when needed.
Space heating is a totally different matter. Firstly, a window (ideally double or triple glazed) with the same aperture as a solar panel will provide just as much space heating - plus light.
Secondly, space heating is normally required in the winter months when there is less solar energy. The ideal solar space heating system is a greenhouse or conservatory, not solar panels!
